3-Day Hiking to the Gheralta mountains

Day by Day

Day 1 – Gheralta mountains (Abraha we Atsbeha and Debretsion Abune Abrham churches)

Pick you from Mekelle hotel and begin the journey towards Gheralta mountain. After a ride of approximately 2hours make a brief stop at Abreha Atsbeha to visit the church of Abraha we Atsbeha. Then drive for about 2 hours to reach the Geralta mountains. From there, you hike for about one hour to visit one of the rock haven churches called Debretsion Abune Abrham, which is one of the most wonderful churches. Towards the end of the day drive back for about 2 hours and spend the night at the Vision hotel in Hawzen city.

Day 2 – Maryam korkor, Daniel korkor, and Abune Gebremikeal koraro Churches

In the morning drive 12km towards Mariam korkor mountain and Daniel korkor to start hiking. This hike takes 3 hours for a roundtrip. Enjoy the view of the mountains from the bottom while having lunch after the hike. In the afternoon drive for about 30km to Abune Gebremikeal koraro Church. Then, hike for one and half hour to visit the mountain church, which is one of the wonders of Geralta with color full paintings. Towards the event drive back to the Vision hotel and have a glimpse into the breathtaking evening view of the distant mountains and the city of Hawzen.

Day 3 – Abune Yemata Guh church

In the morning drive 13 km to Abune Yemata Guh church where you get a tantalizing view of the rock haven mid mountain church. It is the most spectacular church in the country. It is on the Cliff side with a special location in the middle of the mountain. The hike to visit this church, perhaps nerve racking yet fantastic accomplishment, takes about two and half hours. Once back at the bottom of the mountain, mission accomplished to one of the world’s wonders, drive back to Mekelle Hotel. Refresh and in the evening attend a folkloric dinner (this is optional and not included in the price) where you will have a chance to taste several national dishes and enjoy live traditional music and dance entertainment. Traditional coffee ceremony will also be served.
